Defining: “The Best”

March 5, 2007 · Leave a Comment

What does it take to be the best? What does it mean when someone refers to someone as the best? I have a slight problem with using that word to describe someone. I was always told to do my best, not to strive to be the best.  Why is that? There will always be someone better than you, in some form or another.  If you think you’re the best in a certain video game and you set out to beat all your friends and you do, you can’t assume you’re the best in that particular game or in gaming in general, because I guarantee you will be beaten someday by someone better than you in some aspect at that same game. Think about it, in all sporting events, has there been only one person that has won the top spot year after year? No. They may hold the “crown” for a few years in a row, but not for a very long time. So what does it take to be “The Best”?

Fracaso (Failure)

October 22, 2006 · Leave a Comment

-David Spyker.

I don’t think I could convey this any better than Mr. David Spyker. We could all use this sort of motivation every single day of our lives, sometimes even more than once through the day. We will always face disappointments, failures, or other such mishaps. However, our head should always be held high and our spirits always lifted, for we will always learn something new out of the situation and when a similar situation arises, we will know exactly how to confront it.

The Parable of the Pebbles

August 7, 2006 · Leave a Comment

A man was out walking in the desert when a voice said to him, “Pick up some pebbles and put them in your pocket, and tommorow you will be both happy and sad.”

The man obeyed. He stooped down and picked up a handful of pebbles and put them in his pocket. The next morning he reached into his pocket and found diamonds and rubies and emeralds. He was both happy and sad. Happy he had taken some – sad that he hadn’t taken more.

And so it is with education.
